Hi,

Following a major burn out of my 18 month old computer, I have had to resort
to my spare machine.
I have installed the HDD, from the burnt out unit, as a slave drive ( D) in
my spare machine., both are running Win XP and Office 2003.
All my past emails and contacts details are now on the slave drive, How can I
transfer these folders across from D to my C drive?
I have tried the import export facility, and tried to copy the folders to A
drive all without success. I can see the folders on D drive but it will not
give me access to them.
Any ideas would be most appreciated.
Many thanks in anticipation of any help.

What errors are you seeing and what files are you trying to import or copy.

HI Noel,

All I want to do is bring the e-mails and contacts folders, across to the C:
Drive, from the now D: Drive.
Although I can see them in Explorer on D Drive, It wont let me either export
/ copy / send to desktop, or floppy etc.
Thet error messages that I see are either that I dont have enough priviledges
to continue this process, ( I am logged on as the administrator of this
machine), or the files are in use by another version of Outlook.
I have also tried to import the folders from within Outlook running from the
C: drive, but again the process stops then tells me the files cannot be
moved due to the reasons above.
When I upgraded from OE to Outlook 2003 it was a simple case to export the
files to A: then import back into Outlook, but then I only had one master
drive installed.
All I want to do is back up the emails and contact details to the easiest
route, so can I then format the D: Drive.
I have managed to recover all the other data from this drive onto DVD or CDR
so I imagined to recover / backup any emails and contacts would have been a
simple operation.

Many Thanks
Trevor

What version of Outlook are you running on the spare machine. With no
applications running can you right click the file and select Properties and
then security and add your self.

I am, or was using XP Pro and Outlook 2003 on both machines.
I have just spoken to the IT Systems manager here and he seems to think the
error messages I am seeing when trying to open the files may be connected to
a sharing violation, ie, the computer is seeing the D: drive as a 'foriegn'
drive or that 'file sharing is not enabled on D: drive. So it seems great
minds do think alike, same thoughts as yourself.

Many thanks for your help.

Windows Explorer works for me.

Is your account an Administrator account? If so, take ownership of
D:\Documents and Settings\youroldusername and its subfolders. See

Hi Brian,
Many thanks for the help and suggestions.
Unfortunately, I have tried Windows Explorer, it was the first thing I had
tried in fact, just to try and copy them across to either a new folder on
the desktop or to A drive.
The error message I received was on the lines of, ' Access Denied', the disk
may be full or write protected, please ensure this file is not in use by
another program', or 'You do not have enough priveledges to carry out this
task', please log off and back on as an administrator, or words to that
effect, in both cases MS Outlook was not running.
I have just tried the Microsoft link, 'How to take control of a file or
Folder'.
I now receive a message telling me 'the file is locked by another program,
please try again later' ??

I am obviously doing something wrong, or missing something simple, but I cant
figure out what it is just yet.
It could now be that I have 'messed the program up' too much, perhaps a
detect and repair ?

Many thanks for everyones help and input.

Boot to safe mode and they won't be locked. Try copying them then or taking
ownership.
