Outlook E-Mail Accounts- IMPORTING

I want to back-up the settings for my email Accounts in Outlook (2003).
Under File> Import/Export> there is an option to Import Internet Mail
Account Settings... but from where? Cannot locate the option to "export".

I believe that Start-All programs-Microsoft Office-Save My Settings will
do this.....

Thank you Gordon for your reply: while this helps in backing up all Office
Settings, what I was looking for were specific areas (as in email accounts).
The save / Restore My Settings is too generic - it restore all. What I was
looking for was more like a pst file for email accounts.

Sorry, AFAIK there's no way to do this in Outlook 2003......

the only way I can think of that MIGHT work, is to import the mail
settings into Outlook Express (if that's possible) and then export as an
..iaf file. Then reverse the process to restore.

Actually, it can be done, by making a copy of the .ini file that the wizard uses to determine what to save, modifying it to handle only the WIndows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles key (which is relatively easy to find in the .ini file), and invoking the wizard with that particular file. Details in the ORK -- http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA011362571033.aspx. It looks a lot more complicated than it is.

Doesn't it strike you as really weird the functions that work well in one
version of an app that are left out of a successor? I'd love to read the
mind of whoever decided that email account settings shouldn't be easily
transferred between machines.......

The middlin' support for .iaf files was related to the horrible IMO mode in Outlook 98 and Outlook 2000. A lot of us try to pretend that IMO never existed. It was a stopgap measure that created tons of support headaches.

And how do you call the feeling in my head trying to manage the two dozen
e-mail accounts each one specific to a country and/or an ISP?

Or should I consider keeping them all "active". How long will it take to
send/receive e-mails with all the error messages.

You may be right, the pain is way lower at the bottom of my spine.

I am sorry, I didn't find a way to start a new thread in this forum. I
searched the pages with the browser search for words like thread, new, post,
ask, question, and others alike, but nothing. Either I'm blind or it is quite
well hidden.

To my problem, now, please.

After a clean install of Windows 7, I installed Office 2007. I also
installed Windows Live Mail to use it as an intermediate to import mail
accounts. Therefore, I imported all my many e-mail accounts to Windows Live
Mail from previously saved IAF files. Until here all worked as expected. The
problem is that now, when I try to "Import internet mail account settings"
from Windows Live Mail to Outlook it just answers "No internet accounts were
found to import". Or is this forum dead and replaced with a new one, which I
couldn't find

Can someone please instruct me on how to overcome this problem?

Use a real newsreader and this problem will never recur.

I haven't played enough with Windows Live Mail and Outlook to be able to
answer the mail question.

The ability to import an IAF file into Outlook has not existed since Outlook
2000 in IMO mode. No later version of Outlook could import IAF files.
Instead, Outlook 2002, 2003, and 2007 should be able to import internet
account settings from a properly configured Outlook Express. I thought that
importing from Windows Mail was possible as well, but I haven't tried it
myself. I don't think it's possible to import from Windows Live Mail, though.

However, I stayed without an answer. I add a related new question:

Does the Outlook 2007 "Import internet mail account settings" function work
with Windows Live Mail as it did with Outlook Express and Windows Mail, or is
it a new gift from Microsoft disabling the function just to make our lives
easier? Or else, am I having an issue?

All help clarifying this point will be very welcome?
