Outlook doesn't connect to Word as email editor, then it freezes

Suddenly...today...If I try to reply to an email, Outlook 2003 shows that it
is unsuccessfully trying to connect to Word as its editor, then it freezes
completely and must be shut down.

It is also unusually slow to open (2 minutes or more) each time I try to get
back into it (today).

One footnote: there have been five or six times in past six months when
Outlook has suddnly told me that Word is no longer my email editor when I try
to reply to an email, but then I just type that email without Word...and
Outlook and Word then seem to fix the connection themselves upon re-start of
my PC...and that is not nearly as troublesome as freezing (not to mention the
frustration and time consumption of Outlook opening like molasses).

I just realized I should try to re-start now...I'll leave a quick re-post if
it fixes itself but it would actually help if I knew how to fix it without
re-starting.. this, as noted, is a different sort of problem...and your
perspective will be helpful and appreciated since Word and Outlook aren't
perfect together anymore.

As an alternative to fixing the connection (or in addition to fixing it), I
should probably learn how to disconnect Word as my email editor (will go to
Help menu on that now) so I could fix what is happening now in terms of
freezing.

Two possibly relevant details:

1) I should note that last night an MVP on the Word newsgroup helped me 1)
re-establish a connection between Word and EndNote and 2) the Clipboard and
Word. To re-establish the connection with EndNote, I placed a .wll and .dot
file in the Word Start-Up folder (but that was proper per the MVP and EndNote
Help...and it worked to fix everything...I didn't change or delete anything
in the Start-Up folder...I don't think I did, at least...but maybe there's a
clue there).

But the problem may be with Word, not Outlook (except for the slow opening).

I should also note that almost every action in Outlook slowwed to a crawl
due to my use of Norton Internet Security 2006 for first three months of the
year but I uninstalled NIS 2006 two weeks ago...and everything sped up
noticeably. I now use McAfee Enterprise V.8.0 (virus protection only) and it
doesn't seem to be scanning Outlook upon opening as NIS 2006 did.

I depend very much on Outlook 2003 and it's been very good to me compared
with other non-MS programs I might name (each long gone from my PC).

Thanks so much in advance for your help for restoring an old friend to its
trusted self.

Per next steps cited below, I did re-start and Word works with Outlook as
editor again.

If anyone knows 1) why Word "un-hooks" from Outlook spontaneously and 2)
what the "nature" (wrong word, I know, but I have no tech background) of the
Word-to-Outlook relatioinship is, I would be grateful for a "big picture"
perspective.

A simple trip to the Help menu, as I suspected below, taught me how to turn
off Word as editor if, or, based on the increasing frequency of the
"dis-connect"... when...it happens again.

Thanks to all.

Will check later tonight EST and tomorrow for any insights...

Take care,
Dan
