Outlook crashing one in three times it checks mail

Anything obvious I can check please? I set up Outlook (2002) normally and it
worked normally. It didn't check mail. So I turned on this feature for my
12 mail boxes and every time it checks them, it reports about a half of them
not working. with the error message telling me that the mailservers reported
an internal error " The Server Responded -ERR AVG POP3 Proxy Server: Cannot
connect to the mail server". The next time it connects,it does connect to
these servers and reports the same problem with other of my mailservers

As far as I am aware there is nothing wrong with my AVG anti-virus and I
have had my hosting service check the servers for anything wrong. They report
nothing wrong And I should mention that GMAIL does check and get all these
e-mails (I onlyuse outlook to read the mails offline and to delete them from
the servers)

One time in three when it checks the mail the whole of Outlook crashes,
sends a report to MS and laboriously re-opens, interrupting my work about 3
times while doing so. Usually it checks its PST files when opening.
Sometimes it doesn't and just opens immediately.

(I have run SCANPST and it reports nothing wrong)

Check the size of your pst (data files)
With OL closed run scanpst.exe, the repair tool, on your data file - run
several times if it finds/fixes an error
Remove your AVG outlook plug-in in, this may involve uninstalling AVG prior
to reinstalling without the OL integration
Within OL run a detect / repair
Then retest, PS if you have a polling interval set for less than 10 mins
adjust it up to this

Tried all of that and the program still crashes two to three times a day,
seemingly unconnected to the use of the antivirus

Is there anything else I can try?

No, I disabled it on email: It sounded too dangerous to uninstall it
completely?

Will do so now

Uninstall it, then reinstall *without* the Outlook plug in / integration

Useing an AV plug in with email is actually unneccessary, your AV has real
time scanning so any virus would be detected anyway, nor is it neccessary to
scan outgoing mail since you wont have any virus to send in a mail

Well curiously that seems to have cured it, though as soon as I turned av on
again, AVG immediately scanned and SAYS IT found 8 Exploit viruses

Possibly false positives

AVG has an excellent reputation for avoiding false positives. DL didn't
suggest you disable all AV scanning, only the mail integration. What I
would do in your shoes, would be to uninstall AVG and reinstall it, but do
not select the email scanning module. Let AVG update itself again with its
latest virus strings, then perform a full scan of your PC.
