Outlook Contacts and default folders

N

Nanna Vikki

* I have outlook 2007
* Recently had to re install my data into a new computer and it has taken me
days to re set everything, particularly the defaults. All seems to be working
ok except for the following:-
* In folder list view I have 2 sets of Contacts (Contacts) & (Contacts VM) -
(Contacts VM) is where I have almost 5000 contacts and nil in (Contacts)
* I have the address book loaded correctly - When I use the TO I get my
contacts VM and can elect my contact to send mail.
* I have my own customised forms for my Contacts. I can view any of my
contacts via the contact lists in the correct format.
* When I use the NEW Contact though it does not open my customised form
Unless I use CHOOSE FORM which is a long way around.
* I think this is because of the two Contact folders.

Question - How do i delete an unwanted empty Contact Folder. When I right
click the Delete option is greyed out.

Question - How can I make my wanted CONTACTS VM the default folder. And to
open the customised new contact form.

I have taken so long over the re installation that my mind is going blank
and I don't remember how to make the defaults work.

Please help.

State clearly how you migrated your Outlook data to this installation. Doing
so correctly would not create 2 sets of Folders.

mmmm.... well I had a few problems with duplicates and ended up with over
9000 contacts... Have since cleaned out the duplicates

From an other computer I saved my pst file.
I then installed outlook 2007 on new computer.
Initially I imported the pst file with all the duplicates.
I then added a saved pst file which had the correct contacts.
I then deleted the pst file which had the duplicate contacts folder.
Although I only have one pst folder showing now I still have duplicate
Contacts both shown in the one pst folder.

Second reply.

I have now corrected my problem of the default form. I can now click on NEW
- CONTACT and the correct customised form opens.

I right clicked on properties and in the section WHEN POSTING TO THIS
FOLDER, USE: I changed it to the relevant form. Although when i go back to
this section it still shows IPM.Contact - but it is working ok.

I still have the second set of Contacts (empty) but still showing on the
Folder View and in All contact Items. Although I have moved my CONTACTS VM up
to the top.

Sorry problem is not sorted as I had thought.

I just created a new contact and although the form is correct it is now
saving into the empty contact folder instead of my CONTACTS VM with all my
data.

You never import PST files. Doing so will corrupt your profile by creating a
ghost or duplicate file that you cannot close.
Create a new profile and use a supported method for connecting it to your
data file:
http://www.slipstick.com/config/backup.htm
http://www.howto-outlook.com/Howto/backupandrestore.htm
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA010771141033.aspx

Once you do, you will be able to close the new PST file that the new Outlook
profile created automatically.

Thank you for your suggestions, although they didn't really help with my
specific problem.

I had already done most of what the links suggested.

However for others with same problem I will note my actions as follows:-

* Note - I already allocated forms, and selections within the outlook
options.
* My outlook contacts were in a separate folder and not displayed int he
default folder although all other information was as should be.
* I opened the personalised Contact Folder (in folder view) with all my
contacts inserted and visible.
* I manually selected all contacts in Ph view and then mouse over
moved/dragged them to the outlook default Contact folder created by outlook.
*This was successful
* I then deleted my personal contact folder (now empty) from outlook by
right clicking on the folder (there was nothing left in the folder so was not
a problem)
*Now I have all my contacts in the same place.
*All else is now as it should be - ie: the form selected is now the default
form.

The steps I posted, when followed correctly, accomplish the same thing and
also fix other problems users encounter from importing a PST file.
