Outlook changes attachments to dat

One of my etwork users is finding that sometimes attachments reach him in
..dat format. However, if I get the sender to send them to others users, they
appear as they should.

In this instance, the files outlook is converting is .pdf.

Any ideas?
 
make sure the sender uses plain text format to send the messages.
