outlook can't auto receive messages I need to click send/receive

I have a dial up connection. When I am on the internet and bring up Outlook I
need to click send/receive in order to get e-mails. Also I do not know when I
get new e-mails unless I send/receive, the notification is not working even
though I have requested it. I have just switched over to XP from ME and to
Microsoft Office 2003. I was using outlook express before but I have deleted
that.

Do you have Outlook set to check for new mail every XX minutes when connected
to the Internet? That setting will force an automatic send/receive at
startup too.
