Outlook cannot connect to Exchange

V

Vladimir Lemberg

Outlook (2007) is unable to connect to Exchange Server (2007) on Vista
Business.
After I click on "check name", the error message pops up: "The connection to
Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to
complete this action". The machine I'm trying to setup is part of domain. The
Exchange server is pingable.

I have no problem to connect the same version of Outlook running on XP.

Any ideas how to resolve it?

thanks in advance,
Vladimir

Safe to assume that you did a check/repair of your Office/Outlook 2007
install?

Just so you know, when I see this happen under older versions it is usually
due to not being able to reach DC/GC (or Exchange 5.5's directory provider).
Most times it came down to certain registry keys on the client desktop
missing. (HKLM/RPC keys that helps Outlook know what protocols RPC calls can
be made across. The one I'm thinking of is the clientprotcols section of
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325930. Just the section that covers
rpcrt4.dll. If you can't edit registry, uninstalling/resinstalling network
components may fix.)

I seem to be one of a number of people with this problem and no conclusive
answers. I have Outlook2007 running on Exchange 2003 Server and have
connected via a VPN from home. That was a new install of Office 2007. In the
office, however, where I have upgraded from Office 2003 I cannot resolve the
server name ("unable to connect to Exchange Server"). I am happily connected
to the Exchange server via webaccess so that is not a problem. I did the RPC
client thing as per KB325930 and no difference. Any suggestions? Driving me
nuts here. My support company came up with the usual - flatten the machine
and see if it works. I don't really fancy spending hours installing my
software only to find out they were wrong.

I would try a new userid on the XP/Vista box before flattening it. At the
very least, this lets you rule out is it machine vs. user id profile. Just
so you know, in-place upgrade of Office/Outlook don't work very well.
Something happens to the mail profile (registry keys) where you end up
having to create a new mail profile via the mail applet and then delete the
old one*.

* Don't copy the existing mail profile. Create new and delete old one.
