Outlook archives too large

After I archive..........my main .pst file is still 4 gig. How do I reduce
the main .pst file?
 
Since when has Outlook been part of winxp the group you posted to?
By compacting it
And since Archive functions on the modified date it depends as to how much
mail has been archived, as you need to remove a significat amount before
compacting will result in a samller file
 
I thought if I archive the main folder into archived folders that it would
move out older emails which would reduce the largest .pst folder.

But I'm wondering why the main folder barely went down in size.
