Can groups created in the address book be saved when exporting to a file, and
then importing to a new PC or will you need to re set up your groups in the
address book.

You mean distribution lists? It should all be saved in the address book and
go when you export. What version of Outlook are you using?

Outlook does not use groups in the address book.
Perhaps you mean Outlook Express.

I am using Outlook Express and realize that I cannot export and import my
"groups" from my old pc to my new one, so was wondering if I create
distribution lists in the outlook 2002 or XP address book instead would I
then be able to export and import?
also if I imported my address book from outlook express to outlook, would it
save my groups and turn them into distribution lists?
Thanks :-)

Export and import is never the way to transfer data between one Outlook and
another.

However, since your question is about Outlook Express, you may find it more
helpful to ask in an Outlook Express newsgroup.
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.outlookexpress.general is one
such. You can also just copy your WAB file from the old PC to the new one
if you want to transfer your addresses, including the groups.

In theory, importing Contacts from OE into Outlook will turn groups into
DL's. I've even seen it work, but not reliably.

Oddly, DL's in Outlook Contact Folders do not survive exporting and
importing, but once you have them in a Contacts Folder there should never be
a need to import or export. Never use those options for transferring Outlook
data between Outlook installations.

You'd need to ask in an OE group whether there is a way to transfer groups
will to another OE installation. We'd have no way of knowing that.

In theory, importing Contacts from OE to Outlook will convert groups to
Distribution Lists. I've even seen it work occasionally. I've seen it fail
more often. Seems to depend on the versions involved.

Distribution Lists will not survive export/import from one version of
Outlook to another. But since there is never any reason to export/import
Outlook data to transfer between Outlook versions, that is not an issue.
Just copy the Outlook Data File to transfer it.
