Outlook 2007 Search Results None or Incomplete

Outlook 2007 instant search results are either nil or severely incomplete.

I searched on my own name and only got one responce, out of 6000 email
items.

Other common words also got almost 0 results.

Why could this be?

Is Google Desktop any better?

Have you given it enough (idle) time already to let Windows Desktop Search
(not Outlook) index your mail? Leaving it on overnight as the only active
process running should do the trick.

Hi Roady: My search worked great under Beta2, etc., but no on the trial
installation. I now always get zero hits, and mine was fully indexed. I
checked to make sure the RTF was checked and reporting correctly. I ran
diagnostics (clean); then still ran "repair." I'm not sure why its not
working, but I really depend on that feature. I'm forcing a "reindexing" now,
but read elsewhere that this did not help another user. Please help.

This re-indexing is going to take forever, just like it did a couple of
months ago; however, with 15,000 items now indexed, I did a test search on a
term I commonly use, and, Yes! --I am now receiving some hits on both "sent
items" and "inbox". Currently, the hits seem to be the older items; that
might be the order in which the indexing works. Hopefully this indexing will
"hold" after it completes and over time as the outlook program is opened and
closed and the system itself is rebooted.

All,

I have found this not to be the case. Very frequently the indexer would
index itself so it would index nearly 35,000 items, a drag on the computer.
I uninstalled the indexer and it and it's much better now.

btw - Running Win XP SP2 and Office 2007 RTM all patches.

I am having the same exact problem with no results. I removed and rebuilt my
index to outlook several times. When I check the index status, it indexed
12,400 items, and has 0 items left to scan. I have WAY more email than that
to scan. Most of it is in a local .pst file, and I have it selected to index
that folder through the mapi options.

I have searched several knowledge base articles, did the "fixmapi.exe"
program as well, but still no success.

Any other ideas/suggestions on what to try? Should I un-install and
re-install office?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Same thing was happening to me; I went thru indexing and then "rebuilding".
No change. I am using Win XP, not Vista, w/Outlook 07, fyi. What worked was
to uninstall the desktop search tool. What a relief; instant search works
now! Hope this is helpful.

I'm having the same problem: empty searches in OL 2007. I have a new
computer running Vista and OL2007. I simply copied my old .pst file,
"David.pst" to a directory on the new computer where I want it to be and
opened it in Outlook. OL also created a "Personal folder" and the following
folders are populated with data from my "David.pst:) calendar, contacts,
deleted items, notes, sent items, tasks. I have basically been ignoring
these folders and created new e-mail accounts under "David" since none of my
e-mail accounts appeared under either folder. (Obviously, I shouldn't have
just opened my old .pst and should have done something else!) When I check
the indexing status, it shows 0 items remaining in "Personal Folders" and 0
items remaining across all open mailboxes. Yet when I check search options,
it is set to index messages in personal folders, David and in each of my
three defined e-mail accounts. The instant search pane is set to show
results from all folders. Yet my searches in contacts, email accounts -- any
folder -- come up empty.

Any ideas?

I have the exact same problem. Running Vista and OL2007 and it either doesnt
show any results at all or incomplete. The Google Thingy doesnt seem to work
at all either. What can be done? Will there be an update? Do i have to change
something? This is pretty disappointing.

This was the solution for me. Just delete the files as indicated, reboot and
let it start to index all over again:

Delete all files and folders in these directories:

C:\programdata\microsoft\search\data\temp
C:\programdata\microsoft\search\data\applications\windows

I was unable to delete the folders/files because it said they were already
being used in another application.

I solved a similar problem by unchecking all the boxes under "Index Messages
in these Data Files". This is completely counterintuitive: I would have
though that unchecking the boxes would have resulted in incomplete searches.
Now I am concerned that new messages will not be searched.

Can anyone shed light on this problem. The problem seems to be widespread.
I'm surprized that no one from Microsoft has stated a definitive solution.
Microsoft doesn't appear to want to acknowledge the existence of the problem.

Very interesting thread. I was working on the same type of problem for a
while with XP and Outlook 2007 and Desktop Search 3.01. Installed it a few
times, reset it to defaults, did the Diagnostic test in Office...no luck.

However, I was helping a friend with another issue and stumbled upon a
solution that actually fixed things for me as well.

I have outlined the steps on my blog...it is pretty straight forward.

Search failed to return any messages received after mid July.

I deleted these files and my problem went away.

Many thanks. I had the same problem with Outlook 2007 under Vista
"outlook is currently indexing your items"

By following this:

in a couple of hours the index (96,000 items) had rebuilt itself. Now I can
