Outlook 2007 .pst Problems

RDU

I've posted something similar here before but sort of hit a dead end. So, I'm
posting the current problems & actions taken thus far for feedback. Thanks.

Problems
1. 1 of 3 .pst or .ost files very sluggish, e.g. emails not immediately
loading into inbox, slow loading HTML emails, etc.
2. Multiple Outlook proceeses running as displayed with TM, but only 1 with
a description indicating "Microsoft Office Outlook"

Steps taken thus far:
1. Disabling all undeeded add-ins
2. If I try terminating processes mentioned in #2 above, I get the following
error dialog:
Unable to Terminate Process
The operation could not be terminated.
Access is denied.
3. Ran 'scanpst' but no perormance increase seen, however on existing
reminders I now receive 2 reminder pop-ups even though only 1 exists in the
calendar
4. A suggestion was made that an indexing program may be interfering & that
I should try clearing the indices and have it reindex. I do have Windows
Email Search Indexer & WIndows Desktop Search running but don't know how to
clear & reindex.

If you have multiple outlook.exe's in TM then something is clearly wrong
Reboot the PC, start OL & recheck TM
Then close OL & check TM

You better believe something's wrong! :) I've actually done just what you've
suggested on numerpus occasions. Sure, there will only be 1 outlook.exe
process running when I restart then open OL back up again. However,
throughout the day I begin having rogue outlook.exe processes running. I've
run numerous virus & spyware checks with nothing ominous being reported. In
addition, it's just this 1 .pst file that experiences the problems.

I just realized that I did leave out one important point. I do leave a
Smartphone cradled during the day. However, I can remove it from the cradle,
wait awhile, then check TM, and there is often still an outlook.exe process
running.

When OL is initially opened, you have all the data files connected, you are
not opening & closing data files?
If you start outlook using the safe switch does the problem reoccur with TM?

Your smartphone; I'm not sure whether you mean you are constantly syncing

That's certainly one thing that will keep Outlook running, but it shouldn't
cause a new outlook process to start. See if anything here helps:

No, I'm not opening or closing data files, only separate OL profiles. I have
not tried starting OL in Safe Mode but will. The phone is constantly synching
throughout the day. However, when I remove it from the cradle the OL process
does not necessarily stop running.

I'll check these out Brian. I did notice something else this morning that may
or may not have anything to do with my problem. I was in my Exhange Server
profile (.ost). After closing it out, I opened TM to find that an OL process
was still running. It took around 45-60 seconds before terminating on its
own. It could be that I'm not waiting long enough between closing out one
profile before opening another. But then again, I wouldn't think OL would
allow another profile to open if the other's process is still running.

There's no doubt that OL 2007 takes longer to perform its run down than
earlier versions did.

Well Brian, I tried two of the solutions mentioned in the link you sent me,
KnockOut Outlook & Shutdown Add-in for MS Outlook, and neither worked, both
with the Smartphone out of the cradle! I still have 3 outlook.exe processes
running this morning, though none has a descriptor associated with it. I
opened one profile with no problem then when I went to open another it would
not open as the error dialog noted that the .pst file associated with it
could not be opened.Turns out that there is a .tmp folder in the directory
location that cannot be deleted. If I try to terminate the 3 outlook.exe
processes running via TM, I'm greeted with:
Unable to Terminate Process
The operation could not be completed.
Access is denied.

What a bloody mess!

Thanks for your continued assistance.

Reboot, then try running Outlook in safe mode. See if the problem recurs
then.
