I am trying to open a pst file from Outlook XP and am having UAC problems. I
put my pst file in C:\ and that is where I want it. In Outlook 2007 when I
select Tools - Options - Mail Setup Tab - Data File - Data Files... button,
it will not allow me to select my pst file in the C root drive.

I get there error saying that "File Access is denied. You do not have the
permission required to access the file C:\outlook.pst"

When I copy a file to the C:\ drive I get prompted that I need writes, and
if I accept it copies the file there, so I am thinking this has something to
do with UAC.

Is there a setting I can set to allow my account to have access to the C:\
folder without prompting me and without disabling UAC?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You shouldn't put files directly in the root. Make a subfolder first.

Ok, I made a subdirectory C:\Stuff\Messages and copied the outlook.pst file
there and I get the exact same error message. I got a request to allow me to
copy the file there after I created the subfolder and then I got the same
error message from outlook. It seems the same thing is happening when I copy
it versus when I try to access it through outlook except when I copy it, it
prompts me and I can say Yes.

Since Outlook needs continuous access to the file from the start of the
application, it doesn't seem to be ok with it.

I have already tried running Outlook as Administrator and then I could add
my pst file from the root; however, when I closed Outlook down and opened it
without running as Administrator I received the error right away saying it
could not access the file.

Are there any other suggestions you have? I think I need a solution that
will let me tell the UAC to not validate access to a certain folder
(C:\Stuff\Messages in this case) so outlook can run.

If I put the outlook.pst on my desktop, everything works fine. So I need to
know how to treat the subfolder that I created like my desktop. Is this
possible?

Any ideas on this one?
