Outlook 2007 - Is Windows Desktop Search Rqd for Search to Work?

D

Diane

Win xp/Outlook 2007 non-cached mode, all updates, service packs
installed/Exchange 2003

My client is trying to use the search functions which are not working as he
relates below -

The “Search Folders†in Outlook don’t seem to work. The “Categorized Mailâ€
folder brings up some emails with flags, and two without, but I am not sure
if it is locating all of the flagged stuff. The “For Follow Up†does not
display anything and just says on the screen: “Cannot display this folder.â€
The “Unread Mail†folder asks you to “click here to enable Instant search†if
you want to use that, and then it takes you to a Microsoft download site.

I would appreciate help with the following -

- Must Windows Desktop Search be installed for the above functionality to
work? If not, can someone shed some light on why these features are not
working?

- If it is required, can I safely have my user install it, or are there
typically problems on the install?

Thank you for your help.

Interesting - I spoke with MS today and the rep told me Desktop Search must
be installed for any search functionality to work. I thought it was rather
odd, but found some other references that said much the same on the web. Why
does search folders (versus instant search) not use desktop search? I have
not had the user try a new search folder - will do - good suggestion. This
user also has an OST file.

Honestly I don't recall the reason why search folders don't use Desktop
Search - only that when I was in Redmond last March another MVP and I
were talking about a possible solution that would have utilized Desktop
Search and search folders and we were told by the Outlook team that it
doesn't use Desktop Search for search folders.

Instant Search is the only feature of Outlook 2007 that requires WDS I
think. Advanced Search doesn't use it either.
