Outlook 2007 + IMAP = no backup ?

I was using outlook 2007 with an imap account for months when one day
the imap mail gets wiped out on the server. When connecting with
outlook 2007 it sees this and flushes the data file and now I have no
email.

I should note that I had set it up to download ALL the email and not
just the headers so I would have a local backup.

that's how offline copies work. if you want it as backup you need to save a
copy of the pst or move saved mail to a new pst.

As an addendum to this: the point of IMAP is the centralised server - the
messages should have been backed up there.

Do you have another machine which you've been using with this IMAP account
and which still holds a copy of the messages? If you can access it without
allowing Outlook to connect to the net then you should be able to find the
Outlook store ( .pst?) file that holds its offline copies of the messages and
extract / import them.

No I have been using one machine for it, the account had 465 messages
in it. Suddenly pop doesn't seem like such a bad format.
