Outlook 2007 Encryption Problem

Z

Zia Texas

I am using Outlook 2007, Internet Explorer 7.0, and Windows Vista Ultimate
(32 bit), will all the current updates.

I have a current VeriSign Digital ID Certificate (Private Key) installed in
IE 7.0 and Outlook 2007 under my e-mail account. I also have current
VeriSign Digital ID Certificates (Public Keys) installed in Outlook 2007
under the respective contacts.

When I receive an encrypted e-mail from one of my contacts who also has a
VeriSign Digital ID, I get the following error message:

Encryption Problems
Microsoft Office Outlook had problems encryption this message because te
following recipients had missing or invalid certificates, or conflicting or
unsupported encryption capabilities:

ZiaTexas

Continue will encript and send the message but the listed recipients may not
be able to read it.

There are three buttons; Send Encrypted (enabled), Continue (disabled), and
Cancel (enabled).

Note that this message is INCOMING encrypted and not OUTGOING!
Consequently, the above message seems meaningless.

If I press the Send Unencrypted button, the message is decryped and placed
back into my Inbox. Note again, that I'm not sending a message; I'm
receiving it.

Has anyone else run into this problem? If so, has anyone come up with a
solution?

This problem does not exist when I use my backup computer running WinXP and
Outlook 2002.

Sending a read receipt, perhaps?

No, neither of us are requesting or sending a Read Receipt. Any other
ideas?

I'm quite puzzled (as I'm sure you are as well) by the fact that Outlook
appears to be reacting as though it's sending a message when you're trying
to read one.

Click Tools>Options>Security. Are any of the top four check boxes selected?
Click Settings. What values do you have on that dialogue?

Brian:

I opened the Trust Center and looked at the options under E-Mail Security.
For Encrypted e-mail, none of the four boxes are checked. The boxes are:

Unchecked: Encrypt contents and attachments for outgoing messages
Unchecked: Add digital signature to outgoing messages
Unchecked: Send clear text signed message when sending signed messages
Unchecked: Request S/MIME receipt for all S/MIME signed messages

The Default Settings are My S/MIME Settings ([email protected]).

I get the Change Security Settings dialog box when i click on the Settings
Button. The settings are:

Security Settings Name: My S/MIME Settings ([email protected])
Cryptography Format: S/MIME
Checked: Default Security Settings for this cryptographic message format
Checked: Default Security Setting for all cryptographic messages

The Security Labels button gives me the Security Labels dialog box and in
the Policy Module box NONE is chosen.

Certificates and Algorithms
Signing Certificate: William Royer
Hash Algorithm: SHA1
Encryption Certificate: William Royer
Encryption Algorithm: AES(256 bit)
Checked: Send these certificates with signed messsages

I appreciate your trying to help me figure this one out. It may be a
function of Vista and Outlook 2007 as it doesn't happen under WinXP and
Outlook 2002.

Thanks again

I have a problem with this, unless ziatexas@thedomainyouwrote is the email
address of "William Royer". (By the way, never post a real address in a
newsgroup. SPAMmers harvest them.) I also question the encryption
algorithm. I would expect to see "3DES" instead of "AES", but perhaps
that's how your certificate was created.
