Outlook 2007: Email addresses appear in Chinese characters?

I have a user that, after copying and pasting in email addresses to outside
users, the addresses appear in a foreign language (looks like Chinese
characters).

Has anyone seen this before? Is there a setting doing this? She is a recent
convert to 2007.

Copying from where? Pasting to where?

Is it formatted text (e.g. from HTML), or unformatted text (e.g. from
Notepad)?

Windows copy/paste does not convert single-byte characters to multi-byte
characters. Is the source some multi-byte encoded document (e.g. UTF-16)?
