Thanks Sue,

Went thru the install ok. However, in the trust center, COM Add-Ins, the
program is not available.

Does it make a difference that I am using Vista Ultimate?

Sue,
I installed the PST backup tool according to your instructions. I see the
Backup command under the File menu, but can't seem to get it to backup to a
flash drive, zip disk, or CD. I set up the Backup Options, browse to the
desired locations, but nothing happens.
Thanks,
Larry

The backup can occur only after you exit Outlook.

Yes, I'm aware that the backup only occurs after exiting Outlook. However,
in my case, that does not happen. After exiting Outlook, I still have no
backup.

It might be worthwhile to check Tools | Trust Center | Add-ins to make sure the add-in is up and running. You can also double-check that the destination setting for the backup is pointing to a valid location. Also, check in Task Manager to see whether Outlook.exe is still running; if a program is holding it open, the backup can't occur.

Sue, I checked the Trust Center and the add-in is up and running, the
destination setting for the backup is pointed to a valid location. I did
find that OUTLOOK.EXE is still running in the Processes tab of the Task
Manager. However when I choose 'End Process', I get the message "WARNING:
Terminating a process can cause undesired results including loss of data and
system instability. The process will not be given the chance to save its
state or data before it is terminated. Are you sure you want to terminate
the process?"

As I said, if Outlook.exe is still running, the backup add-in can't do its work.

So, does this mean I ignore the WARNING and end the Process? This seems like
an awfully complicated way to backup a file. All the way from complicated
instructions to install the backup add-in (which really should be included in
the original program) to specialized instructions to ignore warnings and end
Processes. Does Microsoft not like people to backup their data?

The real solution is to figure out why Outlook isn't shutting down properly. It could be an add-in. It could be a sync utility. etc. In the meantime, if you want to copy the .pst file (which is what the backup add-in does), you'll need to shut down Outlook.exe.
