Outlook 2007 auto deletes IMAP messages on receipt

When I open Outlook 2007, any new incoming messages are automatically marked
as deleted. I have to undelete them and then they remain undeleted until I
mark them for deletion on purpose.

This behaviour also occurs when I do a Send/Receive to update the local IMAP
folders.

The mail is held on an Mdaemon server on the network.
 
is it spam? outlook will do this with spam as it moves it to the junk mail
folder.

No, it is definitely not Spam. it happens even to messages from people in my
contacts list.
