Outlook 2003 very slow after installing on vista, memory leak?

I was running MS Office 2003 on my XP machine and everythign seemd to
run fine. Recently I bought a new laptop that cam pre-installed with
Vista. I installed Office 2003 on it but Outlook is giving me
problems. I have 1GB or RAM on the machine. Outlook is running
painfully slow. I also noticed in the task manager that Outlook is
gobbling up memory it starts out at about 15 MB and has been as high
as 300 MB of ram. I read some postings that I should create a profile
and .pst from scratch. I did that but this does not seem to make a
difference. Any ideas?

I have narrowed down the problem on this but do not know why it is
happening. I found that it was occuring after I imported the Calendar
from my XP machine. I created a new PST file for my default and
everything was fine. No memory leak no performance problems. As soon
as I imported the Calendar items (which goes back to 2001) the memory
began climbing and the performance degrades. I cleaned the calndear
items out of teh default PST and copied only the items from 1/2007 and
forward and I don't appear to have the problem anymore.
