Outlook 2003 SP2 Hangs

It seems that Outlook is hanging frequently ever since Office 2003 SP2 was
installed. I have seen mulitple postings regarding this, but haven't seen a
response from MIcrosoft yet.

Possible causes/resolutions please......

Thanks.

Can you identify a point where it hangs? Have you rebooted at least once
since installing it?

Diane,

It can hang or at least pause for a long time simply when switching between
folders or trying to open a message. The system has been rebooted several
times since the initial SP2 install. It has gotten to the point where I am
ready to re-intall Office 2003 SP1 if I cannot find a solution.

Thanks.

I'm having exactly the same problem! My Outlook 2002 was setup with the
preview pane. If I normally start Outlook (with the Reading Pane active), it
starts with a blank preview pane and an hourglass. This can go on for
several minutes then it works. Then when I click on another email, I have a
50/50 chance that the preview pane will work or it will do the same thing.
I've tried starting Outlook with the /nopreview switch. It starts fast,
without the hourglass. However, as soon as I double-click an email to open
it, same thing. I get the hourglass for several minutes. Then after it
finally opens the email, I may or may not be able to open subsequent emails
quickly. I've noticed that sometimes, if I leave Outlook running for awhile
(10-15 mins), it works faster. Sometimes it doesn't!

I've even turned off the Office Add-in from Norton AntiVirus. Same problems.

I've also noticed that after starting Outlook, if I look in the Task
Manager, I notice that Winword.exe is running. Why? Is this the cause?

Can anyone help? I've spent hours over the last 3 days trying everything
and searching every forum possible with no resolution. I'm very close to
uninstalling it and re-installing Office XP. I just don't want the hassle of
setting up Outlook again. But at this point, I'm wasting so much time
waiting and trying to fix it that it may be worth the trouble.

Any help would be appreciated!

I neglected to say that I first upgraded from Office XP to Office 2003.
Then, after having these problems and posting to the group, an MVP suggested
that I should have done a clean install. I completely uninstalled Office
2003 and reinstalled it. But, I'm still having the problems listed below.

Thanks,
Clem

I realise this solution may not be the best and is a year since this thread was last updated, but I've just recently had the same problem. I also found that any .chm files would not work properly and would hang for ages as well before appearing.

I've discovered that the problem is a profile based one and can be resolved by creating a new user account. You will always find the problem occurs in accounts that Office and Outlook was installed in.

As I say it's not the best solution but certainly points us in the right direction if someone wanted to explore further. It's more than likely the user based .dat files that are giving the system a hard time, but right now I've just created a new account and everything is fine again.
