Outlook 2003 Slow/Doesn't connect to Exchange after May Windows Up

G

Does anyone know which one of the recent security updates is causing issues
with Outlook 2003 starting slow/failing to connect to Exchange? I am seeing
this problem at a number of my customer's sites.

Why do you think it is an update causing this?

It's hard to make any suggestion without any configuration specifics.

I think it's the updates because there is nothing specific. It's happening
at 5 different companies, with different mail setups, and 50 different client
PC's.

There has been an Exchange update as well; KB931832
And also related could be the DNS update; KB935966

You can find an overview of the updates here;

I found a very similar problem. I'm not running Exchange, but an overnight
update of some kind is making OL 2003 run very very slowly on several
machines in my office. See if this helps:

Go to your main root folder
Right click and select Properties
Select Folder Size

After it's done calculating, Outlook might run way faster. This has worked

Having same problem here on home computer, no exchange server. Just using
Outlook for ISP mail. Installed May updates at noon today. Outlook now
take nearly 2 minutes to open an email. Used to open right away.

Did you try my goofy fix? I found that I don't actually have to calculate the
folder size. As long as I enter "Properties" on the main message store, the
problem clears but I have repeat if OL is restarted. Just curious if that
same action worked for anyone else.

I experienced the same slow-down with Outlook 2003 after the update.
Outlook 2003 was mildly slower, but the email editor would take 30
seconds to display typed words....tried Keith's suggestion (Properties(thanks Keith!!)

After Microsoft update last night, I woke up this morning and my
display was blank...monitor was ON and PC ON (not asleep). I had to
power down, then reboot....that's when the Outlook 2003 problems
started. But, I've noticed my PC is also a little sluggish (will have
to see if Outlook fix also fixed the PC sluggishness or if there's
another issue).

Same here following May update at a customer running Outlook 2003.

Tried the usual file deletes, creating new profiles, etc. Only one pop email
account being checked. Tried Outlook safe mode, disabling all addins, etc.

Microsoft have broken something IMHO!!!!!!!!!

Reports are starting to flood into various support forums on the one of the
updates breaking Outlook.

Will one of the MVPs let the product team know ASAP before the world grinds
to a halt :-(.

Working on that one already. I can't repro the behavior here. Have you
determined which update causes this for you already? Aside from the Junk
Email Filter update there was no specific Outlook update. Since it is not
limited to Exchange accounts it would rule out the Exchange update as well.
The most related one might be the IE update (KB931768). You might want to
start with uninstalling that one.

Okay the IE cumulative update patch is uninstalled and the customer is
testing. Seems logical that the issue is related to this update. Looks to be
a good diagnosis IMHO, especially since Outlook 2007, which uses the Word
rendering engine, hasn't been affected. The customer says that Outlook 2003
ground to a halt within 15 minutes the last time so we'll know soon if this
update is the root cause of the issue.

Will be in contact soon with the results.

Okay folks, it looks like 931768, the IE cumulative update, is at fault:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms07-027.mspx

Uninstalling it and turning off automatic updates seems to fix the issue,
although only limited testing has been done so far. Bottom line is the
customer feels happier that Outlook seems to be working normally again.

Another embarrassing update month?!? Microsoft breaks Microsoft :-D.

I changed my security settings from restricted to internet and Outlook has
returned to normal. Might be an alternative to uninstalling the update. Of
course now I have to be even more careful about what emails I open. Just a
FYI.

I too had the same problem. Removing the KB191768 patch solved the issue.

For those of you that are skeptical about removing a security KB931768 patch,
you can instead as a temp solution is edit your Outlook settings to open by
default to Outlook Today. Thereafter, it works normally even when you view
the Inbox. Otherwise, remove the patch update.

Hmm, interesting work around. I'm not sure what the logic behind that one is
but I've forwarded the info to Microsoft.

Thanks!

Nice solution, but I don't seem to have an option to open in Outlook Today. I
tried:

Tools>>Options>>Other>>Advanced Options

I then clicked on the browse button next to "Startup in this folder", to
change the startup folder from Inbox, but Outlook Today wasn't one of the
options.

I must being missing something obvious, but can't figure it out.
