Outlook 2003 send/receive slow

I've searched for answers to this but can't find anything that sounds exactly
like my issue.
When I open Outlook emails arrive nice a quickly - no problem.
When I send an email, even just a one word 'test', send/receive takes a long
time, around 30-40 seconds.
The emails eventually go, but they used to go instantly.
(Not certain, but I believe they sometimes take so long that they 'time out'
and are not sent at all. This only happens on the other userid on this PC
though, as I haven't seen it myself)
I'm using XP SP3 and have AVG 8.0 Free.
The email scanner in AVG is enabled, but it's set to not scan outgoing emails.
If I open the monitoring window for send/receive, it's definitely the send
part that is taking a long time. If there's an incoming email as well, that
part of the process is very fast.
This has only recently started happening and I haven't knowingly installed
anything new since well before. I say 'knowingly' because Windows updates
happen automatically.
Any help would be very welcome thanks.

Still takes about 90 seconds to send the shortest of emails.
If I send via another server (Gmail) it's fine. Pipex won't answer my
sloooow emails about it though?!
