Outlook 2003 refresh

If I set my view to "Unread Messages in This folder" and
I receive a new message which I then open and close the
screen doesn't refresh until I click another folder or
press F5. In Outlook 2002 the screen would refresh after
opening it and closing so that I only viewed Unread
messages. Is this by design or is there a setting
somewhere?
