Is there any way to turn the reading pane off in Outllok 2003 globally.
Currently I have to do it on a folder by folder basis which is real time
consuming for users who have alot of folders.

Hi,

For Outlook 2000 and Outlook 2002, you can refer to the following Microsoft
Knowledge Base article to disable the preview pane via modifying the
registry key:

832561 How to turn off the preview pane in Outlook 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=832561

However, for Outlook 2003, the registry key addressed in the above article
doesn't work. Therefore, we can use the following workaround:

If you open Outlook by clicking the icon on Quick Launch bar, right click
on that Outlook icon and select Properties, you may see ""C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\OUTLOOK.EXE" /recycle" in the Target box.
You can add "/nopreview" (1. without the quotation marks. 2. there is a
space EXE" and /.) in the end of "C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\OFFICE11\OUTLOOK.EXE" or start Outlook from Start menu -> All
Programs to open Outlook.

Therefore, for Outlook 2003, you cannot deploy the setting during the
installation. You have to modify the shortcut bar setting after Outlook
2003 is installed. It is by design. Sorry for the inconvenience.

If your purpose is to prevent the virus from running, in Outlook 2003, you
don''t need to turn off preview pane, instead, you can set your Security
Zone to Restricted Zones and then block Content from the Internet. Please
click the Tools>Options>Security>Change Automatic Download Settings, and
this will give you the option to download the content but will not download
it by default.

For detailed information, please refer to the following KB article:

831608 Blocking External HTML Content with Outlook 2003

Hope it helps.
