outlook 2003 - process

Since I installed Office 2003 last week, i notice my hard drive seems to
stay very active even though nothing else is open other than outlook. Does
anyone know if outlook has any background processing it does?
 
How much memory does it consume? Is Outlook still very active in safe mode?
If not it could be caused by an Outlook add-in that you installed.
