Outlook 2003 Newsgroups Problem

I followed the procedure to add the 'News' link to the 'Go' menu to open the
newsreader. It seemed to work, and I was able to open my newsreader without
any problems.

But the next time I started Outlook the 'News' link had disappeared. Not
only that, but it's no longer even on the list of items that can be installed
when I tried the procedure again. It's just gone.

What happened, and how can I fix this so I can get to my newsreader again?

What procedure did you follow?

I clicked on the standard toolbar, then selected 'customize'. After that I
selected 'Go' from the left pane and looked for 'News' in the right. 'News'
in the list I dragged it to the 'Go' menu as instructed in the Outlook help
files.

After doing that I could hover my mouse over the 'Go' menu over the toolbar
and find 'News' as one of the options - which opened my newsreader when I
clicked it.

But the next time I opened Outlook the 'News' link had vanished completely -
and I couldn't even find it on the list when I tried to reinstall it using
the above procedure. It's just gone.

Please help!

Outlook uses Outlook Express, that Go thing is kinda shortcut. See if you
can read the ngs with OE.

Outlook Express is not there? Did you somehow uninstall OE then?

| No luck with OE either. It's just not there.

No - OE is still there. I just wasn't able to read newsgroups with it. This
is just plain wierd - one minute it's there and the next it's completely gone.

I even tried 'detect and repair' and System Restore, and those didn't help
either. I'm completely stumped.

Sorry for the late reply. Try the following -- it seems to work for many:

To get the News command back, go back to the Programs tab in Control Panel |
Internet Options and change the default newsreader to Outlook Express. If OE
prompts you to make it your default newsreader the next time you launch it,
clear the "Always perform this check..." box and then click the No button.

You may need to reset the Menu Bar and/or restart Outlook and/or reboot your
machine in order to complete the process. Not everyone is reporting success
with this method, but try it and see what happens. If all else fails, you
can always create a desktop shortcut to Outlook Express and include the
/newsonly switch -- that gives you the same result as accessing the
newsreader via the News command in Outlook.
