Outlook 2003 - Messages invaded by lines

This was one of the first things I noticed upon using any of the Outlook
betas during the beta phase and I noticed it was still available in the
final release. That is that in the mail window where all new or read
messages are shown, each message is seperated by a line. That drives my
eyes crazy. Is there anyway to disable the showing of lines to seperate
each message??
 
View-> Arrange By-> Custom-> button Other Settings-> option Grid Line Style

Also is there anyway to remove the "Favorite Folders" area in the upper left
hand portion of the window?

Nope, just change to the Folder List view.
