outlook 2003 mail arrives already opened--before I look at it!

Hi. Running Outlook 2003 and Exchange 2003. *Some* of my mail arrives
already open--with the envelope icon open. Other mail arrives closed--the
envelope icon is closed. To make things even stranger, the closed mail opens
all by itself--I've watched the envelope icon change from closed to open with
NO keyboard or mouse activity. An suggestions?!?

Do you have the Reading pane showing? If so, there's an option that says
"mark items as read after X seconds".

Right click in the dark area surrounding the reading pane and choose Reading
Pane options.

If only it were that simple. I never use the reading pane and always use the
Mark as read when selection changes, but this changes any email that is
unread in the inbox. I come in to work in the morning and have ten new email,
all marked read. Nothing is configured to do this automatically. What is
causing this?

Any ideas other then the reading pane?

Yes, McAfee Virus Scan Enterprise 8, but so does everyone else on my network
and no one else is having this problem.

Perhaps they don't have it scan incoming mail (because causes more trouble
than it solves).

Does it happen if you open Outlook in Safe mode?

OK, I figured it out! This is probably unique to my situation, but I
thought I'd pass it along in case someone else made the same mistake that I
did! The problem has been happening to three of my users. What do they
have in common?!? They all use Blackberries, and when the mail is opened on
those devices it shows up as opened mail in Outlook--as it should.

I'm seeing the same behavior using MS Outlook 2003 on my laptop. However,
this only occurs with one of my 3 MSN mail accounts (received via the Outlook
Connector). I have 2 other MSN accounts and a MS Excahnge 2000 mail account
where all new mail arrives unopended and identified with a bold fold that
i've specified for unread mail.

i'm seeing the same "opened mail" behavior
- for the same MSN account - on my MPx220 Smartphone. problem is, that the
email arrives as read on both my laptop and Smartphone. i don't have this
problem with my other MSN account using Outlook 2003 and my Smartphone.

any help would be appreciated.
