Outlook 2003 Junk Mail Filter stopped working

M

meister

Hi!

At a moment's notice Outlook 2003 (fully patched) running on WindowXP (fully
patched) which is configured to use IMAP4 stopped filtering junk mails. Is
there a way to "initialize" the Junk Mail component so it will work again

Thanx in advance
Martin

Hello Martin,

Thank you for using newsgroup!

From your post, I suggest we test the following steps below:

Step 1: Check Junk Email Setting
------------------------
1. Open Outlook, click Tool -> Options.
2. Click Junk Email and check if it is enabled.

Test the issue again. If the issue persists, please go on to Step 2:

Step 2: Create a new Outlook profile
----------------------------------------------------
If suggestions above don't resolve the issue, I suspect the current profile
of Outlook has been corrupted. Please perform the following steps to create
a new profile:

Note: We need to backup the Junk Email box before performing the following
steps, if you want to remain the current email in the Junk Mail box.
1. Close Outlook.
2. Click Start menu-> Control Panel. If Control Panel is not in Classic
View, click Switch to Classic View on the upper left of the window. And
then double-click the Mail icon.
3. Click Show Profiles and then click Add. In the New Profile dialog box,
type a descriptive name for the new profile in the Profile Name box, and
then click OK.
4. In the E-mail Accounts dialog box, click "Add a new e-mail account", and
then click Next.
5. Select the appropriate server type for your e-mail account, and then
click Next.
6. Fill in the appropriate information as prompted, and then click Next and
Finish as needed.
7. Click the "Prompt for a profile to be used" option and click OK. This
way, you will be prompted for a profile when starting Outlook.
8. Restart Outlook and select the new profile.

If the problem does not exist in the new profile, you can refer to the
import and export section in following Microsoft Knowledge Base article to
import the data into new profile.

For detailed information, you can refer to the following article:
287070.KB.EN-US OL2002: How to Back Up, Restore, or Move Outlook Data
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;287070

Note: This article also applies to Outlook 2003.

Hope the information helps

Thanks & Regards,
Sally Qiu

Hello:

I'm experiencing the same problem. I have Outlook 2003 and the Junk
mail filter was working just fine.
Then I installed Office 2007 beta 1 (I chose to keep all previous
office versions). I tried Office 2007 for 30 mins and then I
uninstalled it.

After that the Junk mail filter stoppped working and all the spam goes
to my inbox. I followed your suggestion about downloading Outlook
Spy, but there's no "junk mail rule" under the "Associated contents"
tab.

Any other suggestions please?

Thank you.

I believe you have hit on the problem. My Outlook 2003 Junk Email
filter stopped working yesterday after I installed Expression Web
Designer Beta, which I believe is part of, or will use Office 2007
technologies. Uninstalling WebDeigner Beta has not resolved the
problem. Please post if you find a fix.

Thanks.

Yup, same here. Installed Expression on a clean fully patched system, and
Junk Mail 2003 no longer works.

Tried the suggestion at http://www.outlook-tips.net/howto/fix_junk.htm but
the Junk Mail rule is not even listed, so appears to have been deleted.

Anyone from MS got some ideas on this?

As mentioned, I did test the latest suggestion.

However have now discovered that if you uninstall the last Junk Mail update
(Add/Remove Programs > tick 'Show Updates), close Outlook, then run Office
Update again to install the Junk Mail update, functionality returns.

Hope this helps others.

junk mails. Is there a way to "initialize" the Junk Mail component so
it will work again

One way is outlined here:

Well, the solution I found was very simple. I just went to Add/Remove
Programs. Looked for Microsoft Office and clicked on "Change", then I
chose "Reinstall or Repair". I did a repair and after that everything
went back to normal!! Hope it works for you!

I also installed Expressions and my junk filter stopped working.

This solved my problem. BIG THANKS Claus!

I have been having the same trouble with the junk email filter no longer
filtering too. I followed this suggestion of yours and it seems to have
solved the problem.

Thanks,
George

As mentioned, I did test the latest suggestion.

However have now discovered that if you uninstall the last Junk Mail update
(Add/Remove Programs > tick 'Show Updates), close Outlook, then run Office
Update again to install the Junk Mail update, functionality returns.

Hope this helps others.

Yup, same here. Installed Expression on a clean fully patched system, and
Junk Mail 2003 no longer works.

Tried the suggestion at http://www.outlook-tips.net/howto/fix_junk.htm but
the Junk Mail rule is not even listed, so appears to have been deleted.

Anyone from MS got some ideas on this?

I believe you have hit on the problem. My Outlook 2003 Junk Email
filter stopped working yesterday after I installed Expression Web
Designer Beta, which I believe is part of, or will use Office 2007
technologies. Uninstalling WebDeigner Beta has not resolved the
problem. Please post if you find a fix.

Thanks.

Thank you.
