outlook 2003 import and export

Hi,

I prepare to reinstall my computer, so I use file->Import and Export to
export my personal folder to a file called backup.pst. and I copy it to a CD.
After I finished rebuild my computer, I copy the file back from CD, and
uncheck the read-only attribute. But I can not import my backup.pst file. It
gives me an error message called "file is not a personal folders file". I try
use scanpst.exe to fix it, but it gives an error message called "The inbox
tools does not recognize the file backup.pst. No information can be
recovered."
When I copy the file to the CD, I use another cd-rom to test it to see if
the file burned to the cd properly. I can copy the file from the cd to HDD
without error.
I just wondered, why outlook can not import the file that exported by
outlook.
I have Windows XP SP1 with Outlook 2003. If any one can give me a help, I am
very appreciate. Otherwise I will lost my important data.
Thanks.

Exporting is not the correct way to transfer data. It is too easy to get a
corrupt PST file.
Copy and reuse your old PST.

Thank you, Russ. I don't have an old .pst file. So, the only way is to find
a tools to fix this file. I try use easyrecovery, and it can not recover the file.

Can you suggest another way to solve my problem. many thanks.

Yes, I run the scanpst, but gives me an error message:
The inbox tools does not recognize the file backup.pst.

Tell me again how you created this file. If you exported your data to
another PST file then burned it onto a CD without first closing Outlook, it
would be toast. Sorry. That's why we recommend so strongly against exporting
as a backup method.
