After I started to use Norman Antivirus and installed SP2 to computer with
Windows XP - Outlook 2003 starts to hang or not respond. I can reach up to
50 %, 60 % an so on. At last everything is OK. We have a Linux mailserver.
Any suggestions?

Try these in turn. Don't do them all at once.

1) Disable the integration of your AV program with Outlook.
2) Delete or rename %AppData%\Microsoft\Outlook\outcmd.dat
3) See if disabling the firewall makes a difference.

Just wanted to state that I to am now having the same problem. Hangs around
60%. Never had this problem until the last two or three days. However I
tried using Outlook Express and it ran just fine. Go figure.

Nothing seems to help. I've tried everything you suggested, however I still
have the same problem. but if I'm using Outlook Express the problem is gone.
Any new suggestions?

I am like you, where nothing seems to work. Outlook 2003 just keeps hanging
up at about 60%. Then the next time it works and then it may hang the next
time email is checked. Have talked to a few others and they to are starting
to have the same problem. However just like you if I use Outlook Express
there are no problems.

Also I have been reading through this forum and I see there are a number of
people who seem to be having the same sort of problem. Maybe there is a bug
in 2003.

I too had this condition, but I don't believe it has anything to do
with Anti Virus programs. Instead, I determined that it is most
likely due to the fact that the M$ update site is being hammered by
requests for SP2. If you have your XP set up to automatically check
for updates, I believe this is stalling out and causing Outlook to
hang.

As soon as I disabled the services Automatic Updates and Background
Intelligent Transfer Service, everything smoothed out perfectly. The
down side is whenever you want to check for updates you need to reset
these two services to automatic from disabled.

To disable them goto START | RUN and enter services.msc. They are
listed alphabetically. Double click on their their name to change the
settings.

Hope this helps.

Today I decided to un-install Zone Alarm Pro 5.5.062 and to my surprise
Outlook 2003 runs with no problems. Had been using Zone Alarm for a number
of years without any problems until this latest version. Then all the
problems strarted. Has anyone else had this happen? If so what did you do
to correct it?

Thanks

Well I am happy to report my hanging problem has been resolved. It all had to
do with Zone Alarm Pro 5.5.062 latest update. Have now un-installed Zone
Alarm and changed to Norton Internet Personal Firewall 2005 and Outlook is
now running with no hang ups. Go figure that one out. But anyway I am happy
that it no longer hangs when checking for new email.

Stu

Now I have disabled Automatic Updates without disabling Background
Intelligent Transfer Service - and I'm very pleased to say that everything
seems to work perfect.

I hope Microsoft can solve this problem with SP2 soon.

Thanks for your help.

And you may have noticed that, prior to Stu posting, _I_ had written:
3) See if disabling the firewall makes a difference.

So, Stu, you did NOT try all of my suggestions.
