Outlook 2003 hangs on Vista Business

My problem is that Outlook 2003 on VISTA Business hangs when checking for
incoming mail. It also somestimes takes a very long time (several minutes) to
send an email - the email window remains open with the hourglass running, and
while
waiting to send or while receiving Outlook is completely hung, so you cannot
use it - you cannot even minimize or get any response from any of the
Outlook windows. The windows do not redraw.

If I cancel the application using Task Manager, it initially says "Outlook
is not responding" and also "Checking for a solution to this problem" but
then both Outlook and the "Checking for a solution" windows vanish without
trace. On restart Outlook will sometimes work OK when pressing send/receive,
other times it will hang as before. It does not come up with the message
that Outlook was not closed properly and does not go through the file
checking process.

You'll get help for Outlook faster in this newsgroup:

microsoft.public.outlook.general

Mention which version of Outlook you are using, and that you are
using it under Vista, since that newsgroup covers several versions
of Outlook under several versions of Windows.

I have the exact same problem with OL 2003 on Vista Business (plus it
also hangs when opening Tools>Options) and I wondered did you have any
luck with finding a solution? I have posted under the outlook forum but
had no responses so far.

I've had this problem with Microsoft Outlook 2003 hanging for years on
different machines. Always under XP.

I could force it by clicking on a hotlink while mail was still being
downloaded, but it happened at other times too. OL would die for
anywhere between seconds and minutes, depending on the speed of the
hardware. Each time I got a new machine, the time would be less.

Mention which version or Outlook and which version of Windows
you have, since they cover more than one version of each.

Oh I'm not after help. After 4? years I've given up ever expecting it
to work properly. I was merely pointing out that the problem is not
purely Vista-related.

Please understand that most of us here don't give a hoot about
Outlook, since this newsgroup is dedicated to the Windows Mail
email program.

In that case, you might not want to read a thread with "Outlook" in
the subject matter, unless you have something positive to contribute.

As one of the regular responders here, and officially recognized
by Microsoft for my service, it behooves me to do my part to
maintain a high signal-to-noise ratio in this newsgroup.
If this newsgroup were this to become a 'free for all' as far as what
topics are covered, it becomes less and less useful for those who
come here for Windows Mail help.

Different Microsoft newsgroups exist for a reason. The experts tend
to hang out in the newsgroup that reflects their specialty.
