Outlook 2003 hangs endlessly while receiving emails

Not only large emails, as someone posted here, but any email, even headers
only. I then have to close it and restart it. Often when I close it
Outlook process stays active (in Alt-Ctrl-Del) for a long time and sometimes
never disappears which means that I have to kill the process. Sometimes I
even have to reboot. I have been using Trend Micro PC-Cillin Internet
Security for years so don't tell me that it is my antivirus fault.

Does the same issue happen when using Outlook in safe mode? (Start > Run >
outlook.exe /safe > ok button) Reason I ask is that any 3rd party program
that extends outlook functionality can cause issues. (e.g. Dell ships with a
utility [MediaDirect] that makes Outlook go all funky.)

Thanks. I'm presently trying. I'll let you know.

Not sure if your on a network or just 1 PC. BUT on our network email
(Outlook 2003 and Exchange 2000) seems to flow better when I add in a
host file entry for the exchange server on the PC.

While this is a great short term solution, adding the IP/Hostname to the
"hosts" file indicates a problem with DNS name resolution. I would
encourage your site to take a look at DNS/WINS resolution to ensure that one
doesn't have to resort to using the host/lmhosts files.

Just one PC (except that very occasionally I network both my laptops but
this is not the cause)

I tried Outlook in safe mode and it worked well. Then I tried Outlook full
capabilities (without the safe mode) and it worked well also. I thought
that the bug was fixed and I was going to post here when it happened again.
I then launched Outlook in safe mode again and even in safe mode it now
hangs on receiving. I am on gmail. I was wondering if it could be a
problem on their end but mail comes to my screen on their website without
any problem. I thought it could be a gmail problem because I had the usual
message:
Are they other gmail users that experience this?

What I miss the most in safe mode is
1. the reading pane
2. the undo button when composing mails
3. the check mail while typing
4. the font Verdana 9 (only 8 or 10 possible)

I have had this happening a lot too. I find that this is caused by viewing (or editing) email in html or rtf. If all emails are viewed in text and modified in text, then this does not happen. Strange. Hs
