Outlook 2003 changed with Windows 7

I just installed Windows 7, and after reinstalling Office 2003 (I had to
format the hard drive) finally got Outlook to work. However, there are two
"changes" which I want to "unchange."

One is that when I compose an email and press the Send button, it
immediately is sent rather than being put in the Outbox and waiting on me to
press Send/Receive. That is what I want - to wait until I press the
Send/Receive button. How do I get it to do that?

The second is that when I go to Contacts, rather than showing the deep blue
color in the first name, it puts a border around the first entry, which
prevents me from just pressing a letter to go to that part of the alphabet in
the contact list. How do I get it to show the deep blue on the first name?

Click Tools>Options>Mail Setup and uncheck "Send immediately when connected".

Are you using Outlook Today as the starting folder? When you do, there won't
be any entries with focus when you open a folder. Change the startup folder
(Tools>Options>Other>Advanced Options>Startup in this folder) to, say, Inbox,
then stop and restart Outlook and an entry will have focus when you enter a
folder and allow you to press the letter to jump to the first contact starting
with that letter.

Brian, another Outlook 2003 issue:

I installed Win7 (at home) and when I try to configure Outlook 2003 to
look at our exchange server (at the office) it cannot get access to this
server. It says outlook must be online to access the exchange server.
All other internet access works perfectly.

I did try to turn off the Firewall but this did not help.

Any suggestions?

How are you connecting to the Exchange Server? It's normally done through a
VPN....
