Outlook 2003 can't connect ...

Windows XP Media Center/Outlook 2003

web browsing OK (internet WAN is up)
, ping IP OK (traffic routes OK)
, ping by mail.domain name OK (dns resolution works from PC)

But new installation of Outlook 2003 "cannot find server" for both POP and
SMTP attempts. We've tried everything we think.

Any ideas?

maybe you choose the wrong pop and smtp servers?
