Outlook 2003 - Assigned Task Status Not Changing

I assign tasks to others in my office. We use Outlook 03. The task request
I send are properly received. When they mark them complete, I receive a
status report in my email (indicating completion), but the assigned task
(sitting on my task list) does not update and says "waiting for response from
recipient". In Tools > Options > Tasks, I have all the default checkboxes
checked. Is there something I have improperly configured?

Further discussion with others via phone....Am I expecting more that Outlook
can perform? I assumed that when my coworker completed the task, the status
of that task would update on my task list (in the view showing tasks by
assignment). The person I spoke with said we'd ned to be running Sharepoint,
and possible an exchange server for that to occur. He expressed that
otherwise, I have to manually update the task in my list when I receive a
status report.

Are we missing something?
