Outlook 2000 reminder problem with incoming e-mail

I have a user whose Outlook has started giving a reminder pop-up when a new
e-mail message arrives in the inbox. It's Outlook 2000 on a WinXP machine.
She has thousands of e-mails - we've been archiving and deleting since we've
had to run the scanpst on her pst file at least 3 times in the last 2
business days. I think it's basically working correctly, but the reminder
pop-up is just so odd. The "new e-mail" sound does work. The pop-up appears
to be in addition to the new e-mail sound and icon.

Try opening Outlook with the /cleanreminders switch. I don't know if it will
make a difference or not, but it's worth a try. What size is the user's PST?

PST is over 1 gig (I think it's around 1.5 gig). Do you have a link or can
you provide quick directions on how to do the switch? I think I read about
the use of switches in other posts, but I don't know what/how to do that.
Thanks for your reply!

You also will want to note that in versions of Office older than 2003, the
PST size limit is 2 GB but that it can become unstable and suffer problems at
around the 1.5 GB limit.

I'm thinking that is indeed what's happening (unstable). The reminders are
"out of control" and using the switch didn't help. Items that aren't
reminders, such as contacts, are showing up as reminders now. Dismissing the
reminder doesn't help, they continue to show up - sometimes even as a repeat
- that is we dismiss the reminder and then it pops right up again as if
saying "Are you sure?"
I'm debating about running the repair tool from Office 2000 to see if that
will help. Any other ideas?
Thanks!

Success - I've been able to fix this problem. I ended up copying the
contacts (using the export feature), then having my user check/correct/delete
all the contacts. I then made print screens of the distribution lists, since
I can never get those to export properly and there were e-mail addresses
missing anyway. After closing out of outlook, I then renamed the pst file,
made a backup copy too, removed the account in the control panel and created
a brand new account and pst file. It does now open without the extaneous
reminders and we've even been able to open the "offending" pst file without
the reminders popping up.
I did do a total uninstall/reinstall yesterday and still had the problems.
Thanks to all for your help. I'll try to figure out how to state that this
issue is resolved!
