Outlook 2000 needs a XP-Pro registry edit to fix passwords

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 290684 tells how to edit the register for Win 98, NT, 2000 to correct the problem with Outlook 2000 forgetting the ISP passwords. When I click Send/Receive the name and password dialog box pops up and it has to be filled in for each email address, what a drag but Norton Password program at least does the typing.

The article indicates that the user should edit the register to delete some erroneous keys. I think I know what happened, I installed an ISP's sw to try the service and as soon as I checked my email I started getting this action. Still do after removing the ISP's sw. It was cheaper service but not faster and of course you get what you pay for.

I started regedit and found the path they recommend in http://support.microsoft.com/?id=290684 down to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider. It then says to right-click the user subkey, and then click Delete. There were no user subkeys in the Storage System Provider, at least not identifiable as such. I do have this subkey---- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider\S-1-5-21-1659004503-2000478354-839522115-1003 and under that there are two sub sub folders called data and data2. But no mention of user or security anywhere.

First can I use the NT 4 description in the KB article? I am running XP-Pro. Is this the reason the desription for the info expected in the sub key so far off from what I have?
What do I need to do to eliminate the problem. I thought about doing a restore but since I created one I have added a couple of programs that I'd rather not do a reinstall on.

This fix applies to Outlook and other programs that store passwords
in the Protected Storage System Provider sub-branch of the Registry.
It also corrects some issues with Internet Explorer and Autocomplete.

Thanks for the help Carey. Worked the first time. The KB article essentially said the same thing but it said to click on a security key etc. and delete the user data so I hesitated to delete something that didn't seem to agree with them.

Thanks for the help.
