I have a mammoth outlook.pst file - 452 Megs !!! I ran scanpst against it and
it fixed several problems, but left the file the same size. I then went into
outlook and ran the .pst compact procedure per microsoft instructions, but it
only took a few seconds and said finished. The file is still the same size!

What should I try next ?

Thanks all

What makes you think you need to try something else?

Let's see, Russ, a 452 Mb file, running under win98, on a very slow cpu with
128 Mb of ram, I'd like to make this file a lot smaller. Outlook runs at the
speed of dark, and that's why I'd like to try something else.

But why do you think compacting will help if the file is already compacted?
That only removes white space. If the file is too large, remove or archive
the contents you don't need.
That's not at all an unusual size for a PST file. How do you know it's
responsible for your performance problems? Have you tried repairing this
file?

This is on a client's cpu.

Yes the first thing I did was to run scanpst to repair the file, and it
found and fixed many problems. But the file size changed minimally. Then I
ran the compact routine and it didn't change at all.
My own outlook.pst file is 12 megs, theirs is 452. I asked them what could
they possibly be keeping to make the file so big, and they couldn't think of
a reason. "Maybe old emails and some jokes ...". I think I will try
archiving some items next.

Eliminate the mystery.
Root Folder > Properties > Folder Size... will tell all.
