Outlook 2000 - contacts lost through sync error

D

Deep Thought

Long sorry story cut short... have lost all the 1100 contacts in my Outlook
Contacts list due to synchronising my Jornada 720 via Activesync when the
Jornada's contacts list had been messed up by CE version of Truesync
installed only in the Jornada.
My Calendar appears to be o.k. and I am not sure if Outlook has been
damaged/corrupted in the process - but assuming it is not and I have an
empty Contacts list but otherwise the Calendar and other apps are fine - can
I do a one-time synchronisation with Outlook using a RESTORED Jornada
(restored using a back-up disk that would effectively provide the Jornada
with a clean copy of the Contacts list)? I do not wish to risk losing the
existing Calendar data etc.

If I were in your shoes and I had a backup of my PDA, I'd make a copy of my
PST, restore the PDA backup, sync, delete all my calendar entries, then open
the saved PST and pull the calendar entries from it to the main PST. If
there were other folders (like Tasks) that were newer in the PST, I'd do the
same for those.

Another approach would be to add a brand new PST to Outlook, make it the
default delivery location, restore the PDA's backup and sync only the
Contacts folder. Then I'd switch back to the old PST for delivery and copy
the Contacts folder from the synced PST to the main one.

have resolved situation (it seems) - here's how:

Hard reset Jornada and restored it using back-up CF card (lucky)

Checked that the contacts list in Outlook was definitely empty (deleted all)

Created new partnership via Activesync

Carried out sync and chose the COMBINE option re data from Jornada & Outlook
(duplicates were then discarded when prompted)

....seems Outlook was not corrupted, merely the data in it - phew
