Outlining

I would like to assign certain headings in my document section numbers so
that if I delete one section the other section numbers adjust accordingly.
Is there an effective means of assigning these manually as the document
doesn't make use of outline levels or built-in styles? Thank you in advance
for your assistance.
 
You can apply outline numbering to any style, but if you have not used a
particular style consistently for the section headings, you could use SEQ
fields.
