Outlines around objects.

I have several rtf files generated by another program. In the past, Word
2003 would open these files and everything looked great. A couple months
ago, I opened some of the files on my computer using Word 2003 with the
latest updates. In the past these files look good but suddenly, many of the
components on the page were surrounded with an outline. I opened the same
files on another computer with Word 2003 (probably not updated in a long
time) and everything looked good again. Can anybody tell me how to get rid
of the outlines?

I don't believe I've encountered what you're seeing. Can you describe the
outline in greater detail?

I believe this is at least the second time it's been reported, though,
unless this is the same poster asking about it again.

Herb:

The best way to describe what is happening, is to show you. I am sending
you a copy of the RTF file along with a scan of the printout of the file,
printed from Microsoft Office Word 2003 (11.8169.8172) SP3. The scan is in a
pdf format, but shows you what the file looks like in Word 2003 on my laptop
but not on other computers I have tried. Several of the objects have an
unwanted thin black outline around them.

Thank you for your reply,

What you're seeing are textbox borders. I'm not sure why they're showing up
sometimes but not others. Oddly enough, they show up here in Word 2003, but
not in Word 2007. My guess is that there's some .rtf nuance that accounts
for it.

To hide the lines, you're going to need to select each text box, right-click
the border, and choose Format AutoShape. In the Colors and Lines tab, set
Line Color: to No Line.

This won't be hard for the most part. I'm also seeing a right border on the
NDMS image, which is hard to select. You might try using the Select Objects
tool (in the Drawing toolbar), or you can right-click the main textbox and
choose Order - Send to Back... then reorder the different objects once the
background object's border is hidden.

A more efficient solution, however, is to open the file on one of the
computers where the problem doesn't occur, then save the file in Word *.doc
format. When I did that (using Word 2007), I was then able to open the
resulting file using Word 2003 without the lines appearing.

Herb:

Thank you very much for your reply. We are both honing in on the same
direction.

I noticed in Microsoft Word 2003 Version 11.8134.8132 SP2 everything looks
good. If I click on any of the components, then right-click on the border
that appears, a menu will appear. If I choose "Format Autoshape" a form
opens. In the form, under the "Colors and Lines" tab, there is a section
called "Line". In this section there is a "Color" option set to "No Line".

In Microsoft Word 2003 Version 11.8169.8172 SP3 the components look funky.
Most of the components are surrounded by a thin outline. If I click on one of
the outlined components, right-click on the border that appears and choose
Format Autoshape>Color and Lines, the "Color" option in the "Line" section
is set to BLACK.

My guess, the rtf file produced by my application does not specify a line
color. In SP2, in such a case, the Line Color defaults to "No Line". In SP3
the default Line Color is BLACK. This must be a bug in Service Pack 3 since
neither Service Pack 2 nor Word 2007 behave this way.

Thank you very much,

Stuart J. Cohen
