I've read through many previous posts but still don't understand, or can't
get, this numbering to work.

I would like to start off my numbering with 1a) followed by the next point
1b), etc. Somewhere along the way, I would eventually want to change this to
2a), 2b) etc.

Please can someone explain again in really simplistic terms if this can be
done and how?

Regards,

For this kind of numbering, where several levels are in the same paragraph,
you would need to set up an outline-numbered list (with "1" for level 1 and
"a)" for level 2), apply the numbering to text, and then insert LISTNUM
fields.

Create the outline-numbered list attached to styles, as explained at
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html.

To add "1" to text in your document, apply the corresponding (level 1) style
to the
paragraph.

To add the "a)" within the same paragraph, insert a LISTNUM field: Press
Ctrl+F9. Type LISTNUM \l 2. Press F9 to update.

Note that you can change the level of an existing LISTNUM field by
right-clicking it and choosing Increase Indent or Decrease Indent from the
context menu.

To show/hide field codes, use Alt+F9.
