out with the old and in with the new

Hi

I wondered what my best plan of action was for getting rid
of Windows messanger.

I want to use the latest MSN version of the messanger
instead.

So I guess my question is: If I install MSN messanger,
will it update the Windows messanger already installed?
Or, do I just unistall Windows messanger, and if so...how?

I read in an earlier thread that you need the SP1...
something or other installed first, but I have no idea
what that is?

Thanks for any help

It doesn't update. It sensibly (!) sits alongside Windows Messenger...

Windows XP Service Pack 1a (SP1a). With this installed Windows Messenger
appears in the Windows Components section of Add/Remove programs (presumably
as MS got their wrists slapped for anti-competitive behaviour).

The files aren't actually uninstalled, but for me the program stopped
running. Others have said that it doesn't though.

Greetings Shane,

To disable Windows Messenger so that you don't need to worry about any issues arising from
Windows Messenger being uninstalled or partially uninstalled, open it up (click Start, then
Run, type "msmsgs" and click OK), click Tools, Options, Preferences tab and uncheck 'Run this
Program when Windows starts' or 'Run Windows Messenger when Windows starts' (depending on
version) as well as 'Allow this program to run in the background' or 'Allow Windows Messenger
to run in the background' (depending on version). This won't remove Windows Messenger, so
features like Remote Assistance, Whiteboard and Application Sharing will continue to work,
but it will let it stay out of your way.

Also, do you have Norton Antivirus installed? Recent versions of Norton Antivirus added a
new "instant messaging scanning" feature, which can conflict with Messenger and cause it to
also keep starting. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus
icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'),
click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

Jonathan,

The original questioner was asking about having MSN Messenger installed
as well as XP Messenger.
Here with Norton AV 2003 installed, the machine where I have tried
installing MSN Messenger 6.1 as well as XP Messenger has all the tick
boxes greyed out (and presumably unticked). The machines which only have
XP Messenger 4.7 or 5.0 allow me to tick or untick the box.

I'm still trying to get more than one machine to work with audio & video
through a router, and this is yet another variable to throw in!

Hi Bill,

I know what the original poster was indicating and formulated my post as such.

Actually, the behavior of this checkbox and even the name of it changes depending on the
version on Norton Antivirus and what software updates have been installed, so what behavior
you see and what others see are going to be different.

Thankfully this behavior shouldn't cause a big issue for Audio/Video conversations, so you
shouldn't have to worry about that.
