This was largely discovered, yesterday, the key words being "out-of-band"...

XP too

out of sequence, out of band- same difference- they were still pushed out
prior to or after "tuesday patch day"

There are those in the Windows Update newsgroup that would beg to differ with
your terminology use, Robin !

They may not have been http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Out-of-band#Computing

The important thing here, is they were found and applied by those that chose these
updates. This also raises another question, for those that have WU automatic off, like
I do - do I check WU every patch Tuesday or do I check it more often if MS insists
in releasing these types of updates.

Hi Robin,

These are not security updates. MS release security updates and some
non-security updates on the second Tuesday of the month and releases
non-security updates on the 4th Tuesday of the Month. This has been
like this for quite some time.

Take a look here to see the pattern:

I have it set to notify me but do not download or install them
this way I have the choice which way to go and also since it notifies me I
know there are new ones that are "cough cough" out of band updates

These are expected updates. This seems to be a paradigm--releases of
non-security, but high priority, updates, on a Tuesday--perhaps always 4th
Tuesday?

Hi there,

Unfortunately I'm going to take issue with you on this, there is no pattern, not that
I know of - this seems to be a one or two-off.

There are many out there that are extremely particular with WU, if there was another
date other than "Patch Tuesday", I would know of it.

But, I may be wrong, but, I don't think so.

As you can see further up this discussion, there were updates to XP, which Robin
has not noted, though she takes care of XP machines, don't you Robin ?
Or have you migrated everyone to Windows 7 ?

Taking issue is encouraged, of course, but the first substantive paragraph
at the link WTC provided includes this sentence:

"This information will be updated either during our regular update releases
on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month or whenever an unscheduled
update is released."

This seems to clearly state that the fourth Tuesday releases are part of a
"regular" schedule.

Are we to interpret this that MS is now hinting or actually stating there will be
two Patch Tuesdays every month. ?

Some would have a problem with this that have WU off, having to cope with
two patch days in a given month might be a bit of a problem for some that have
better things to do, nevermind MS Support.

Hi Randy,

no, I just had the windows 7 machines on and saw this
I did not have the xp machines I have on at that time
once I put one of them on a day later then I saw them
I did not post because last week was a very busy week for me and I just did
not get around to posting the xp ones

I totally agree with what you said above here, I have 8 computers of my own
and to have to patch them once a month is enough of a pain and twice is a
worst pain, nevermind all the computers I maintain, then I wind up living on
these things for 3 wks instead of 1

How often should I check for updates?

That depends. If you turn on automatic updating, you don't need to
remember to check for Important and Recommended updates for Windows
Vista, or High-priority updates for Windows XP. Windows will check for
new updates whenever you're online and install them using your
automatic updating settings.

If you do not use automatic updating, you should check for updates at
least once each week. Microsoft generally releases updates that cause a
restart on the second or fourth Tuesday of the month. However, some
updates may be released at any time in order to offer you the choice to
install them and realize the benefits as quickly as possible.

For Optional updates for both Windows Vista and Windows XP, you'll need
to go to the Windows Update control panel and select which downloads
you'd like to install.

I shall do this and pass this along, I and am sure others appreciate your time for explaining
this in depth.

Thanks,
