Ok, most of you know I don't care for footie but I am aware we wuz useless.
I wonder what it will be like to go down in history as possibly the crappest England team ever? Bit sad, really.
Back in the day, soccer was predominately a British sport. When England won the world cup 44 years ago, not much of the rest of the world played football. Which is probably why we won.
They've caught up.

Not so. Everyone played football from the beginning of the 20th century onwards. The first World Cup was in 1930 and it was known, even before that, that the South American teams were very good. In the twenties Uruguay were the best team having won the Olympic title and then the first World Cup. Brazil were always a formidable team. In the 50s Hungary were superb.
In 1966 England had a very good team (even better in 1970) and deserved to win. Since then everyone else has not just "caught up" but left us standing.
