I've copied documents from a CD then edited and saved as a new file, but
occasionally when I send them, others can't open them. Doe's it have anything
to do with the "x" on the suffix?

Yes, it does. It means you're using Word 2007 and they aren't. Nor are they
running the compatibility pack. Do a Save As and change the file type to
Word 97-2003 format.

The *.docx format is the new file format used by Word 2007. Users of earlier
versions of Word will not be able to open your documents unless they have
downloaded the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and
PowerPoint 2007 File Formats
from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...70-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466&displaylang=en.
The Compatibility Pack can be used only in Word 2000 and above, so it will
not help users of Word 97 and earlier. To make it easier for recipients of
your files, save them in Word 97-2003 (*.doc) format instead.
