OT: XP Tray Icons

I know this is a little off topic, but the XP groups are full of trolls,
etc.

OK, having a problem thats driving me nuts. I'm aware that there's a
feature that hides inactive taskbar icons, which I've had tried turned
both on and off.

All of my software starts, but the icons in the lower right corner of my
taskbar don't appear. Is this a known oops? Started happening a week or
so ago out of the blue. Can't think of anything I could have installed
that would cause this.
