A new subject for me:
Was told that ME enables working with digital camera images transferred to the
hard drive.

Can't this also be done as well in W98SE?

Any recommendations for utilities for this?

TIA

Do you mean as regards to USB connectivity?

If so, have a look at

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q240075/

if you're getting problems with USB in WIN98SE

alt.windows98 (my other home!)

On the whole, with W98 you just need a driver that should be in your
software, (unless W98 is not supported by your device)

I *always* recommend [to those buying a digital camera] to buy one of those
small, thumb-drive-like card-readers and to forget about installing the
"bloatware* and drivers that come with their camera. It's much easier to
simply use Explorer to copy the photos to their hard drive, plus there's no
resident program sitting in the system tray that's hogging precious system
resources.

Take a look at Cam2PC --> http://www.nabocorp.com/cam2pc/

small, thumb-drive-like card-readers
Is this an accessory to buy separate from a digital camera?
And unique for each brand camera?

Yes... they cost about $10-20, but IMHO it's cash well spent. You'll have
to get one that accepts the type of memory card your camera uses (SD, xD,
MMC, etc.)

Something similar to this -->

or even somthing like this -->

But... *IMPORTANT* - if you're running Win98se, be sure that there's drivers
for Win98se.

I agree with everything you say -- particularly about not using the
bloatware that comes with most cameras. Depending on one's set-up
and space, though, I found that the slickest way to add a card
reader was to use a spare bay in the desktop computer for a cheap,
internal USB 2 unit like this one:

http://tinyurl.com/cv7kt

(That leads to

7910961&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_
uid=90438)

It's nice to have it hooked up without trailing yet another USB
cable across the desk, and getting an extra front-of-case USB port
has been nice as well.

This may be relating to a comment where ME is easier to work with digital cameras
than W98SE, maybe less additional drivers.
